This week, we are concentrating on a project that holds significant sentimental value for us. In 2011, we acquired our first home in Seattle, situated in the heart of the Ballard neighborhood. The home was a 1913 Craftsman-style house with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and 850 square feet of living space.

Given the property size of 3,400 square feet, we were obligated to preserve the existing footprint of the house. Nonetheless, we decided to enclose a portion of the front porch to create additional storage space and to enlarge the previously cramped bedrooms.

As part of the remodel, we raised the entire upper level by approximately 16 inches after encountering hardpan soil while excavating the basement to increase headroom. Elevating the house also enabled us to install taller windows, thereby enhancing the natural light within the home.

To alleviate the cramped and compartmentalized layout, we chose to remove the kitchen wall and open up the basement stairway.

Upon completion of the renovation, the home was transformed into a four-bedroom, two-bath residence with all new features and amenities.
