Tangletown Residence and guest house is set among early bungalows and new in-fill projects nestled on a Seattle hillside. The primary goal was to create a home that complimented the scale and fabric of the existing neighborhood while providing a visually striking and modern interpretation of traditional design. To meet this goal the home was designed as a simple gabled structure with deep overhangs and infused with traditional and nontraditional materials. The vertical battens give the exterior siding three dimensional depth and the monochromatic color scheme modernizes the overall façade. The home is recessed into the landscape to manage overall scale, provide a private entry, and diminish visual impact of the garage. A roof top deck is carved from the gable to provide a private space with territorial views. Insulated polycarbonate panels installed along the staircase provide an abundance of natural light without sacrificing privacy. The spatial sequence was arranged to provide desired privacy needed in an urban setting.
