The Maple Leaf Residence, located on a bustling Seattle street, was designed to acknowledge the variety of neighborhood uses, filter street noise, and maximize visual privacy by utilizing thick poche walls, unique massing, and rigid exterior materials. The street facing façade acts as a filter between public and private. The filter concept is utilized throughout the home. The entry path is recessed between steel plates, slopes to door, and angled to preserve the large evergreen tree. The entry is purposely compressed to help dramatize the volumetric living room space located on the second level. Perforated steel screens line the staircase while filtering the living room from kitchen creating a sculptural piece within the space. Perforated exterior siding filters privacy and natural light from street facing glazing. Interior spaces were designed to take advantage of the distant Olympic Mountain range and beautiful sunset light. The owner’s bedroom features a keyhole view of the Space Needle.
